We’re Here to Help – FAQs

How often should I get a cleaning?

It is recommended that you see your dentist once every 6 months for a professional dental cleaning and an exam with the dentist. Some patients may need more frequent visits if there are signs of gum related issues.

How often do I need x-rays? Are they safe?

There are a few different types of x-rays your dentist can take. The most common are called Bitewing x-rays and they’re typically done once per year. Bitewings are pretty easy to take and only adds about 5 minutes to your cleaning. They help your dentist and your hygienist detect cavities forming between your teeth.

There is also what’s called a Full Mouth Series which are individual images of each tooth. These images show the tooth as a whole, the root and the crown of the tooth. This helps ensure there are no issues lying far below the surface. These films are typically taken once every 5 years.

A panoramic x-ray is also a common one, typically done to evaluate the need for orthodontic treatment and/or timing for the extraction of wisdom teeth.

Dental x-rays are very safe when taken in the timeframes listed above. X-rays taken in the dental office use very low levels of radiations and as a precaution our office also uses lead aprons.

What do I do if I’m having a dental emergency?

If you are having a dental emergency, please contact the office. Usually, if you’re an established patient, we are able to coordinate a time for you to be seen either day of or the next business day.

How does having a joint replacement affect my dental care?

Yes! If you have had or will be having any type of surgery where something artificial is being placed, we need to know the following:

                 1. Do you need to take an antibiotic prior to your dental visits?

                 2. If there is a waiting period needed before coming back in for dental                             visits? If so, how long?

Your surgeon will be the point of contact regarding these restrictions.

How does having a heart procedure or stent affect my dental care?

Sometimes there are dental restrictions placed by your cardiologist after having any type of heart surgery. We need to know the same things:

                 1. Do you need to take an antibiotic prior to your dental visits?

                 2. If there is a waiting period needed before coming back in for dental                             visits? If so, how long?

Your cardiologist  will be the point of contact regarding these restrictions.
